The Palanggana Method for Curly Hair

The Palanggana Method a.k.a bowl method is dunking your freshly rinsed hair in a palanggana or bowl of conditioner-water several times. 💧

This method is a more sustainable way of doing squish to condish. Dusing squish to condish, you usually stand under the shower which sends a lot of water straight down the drain. To avoid wasting too much water, try the Palanggana Method instead.

Steps for the Palanggana Method

  1. Fill a palanggana or bowl with water.
  2. Tilt your head forward and flip your hair into the bowl.
  3. Using a tabo, pour water on the back of your hair and make sure the water goes into the bowl.
  4. Start squishing your curls with conditioner. Do this for up to 2 minutes.
  5. Optional: If your curls have not formed into nice, big clumps and appear to be stringy, use more conditioner and keep squishing.

With this method, the water you’re using goes back into the bowl. Mother nature will be proud of you!

Benefits of the Palanggana Method

Hydrated and moisturized curls

Yes, the method is another way to be more economical – but did you know that it actually makes your curls more defined?

Since you’re squishing your hair into the same bowl over and over again, your curls are soaking in the water saturated with conditioner. You’re basically marinating your hair in a bowl packed with hydration and moisture, perfect for preventing frizz and defing your curls (Source: Terrific Tresses).
